There are many types of masks and each of them enjoy different features. During 2020 pandemic, it is necessary for us to distinguish their information and have a better understanding for them.


In fact, masks can be divided into mainly 3 types, namely, N95/KN95 respirators, surgical masks and cotton masks. The below article will have a brief introduction to their features and functions.


N95/KN95 respirators


N95/KN95 respirators are designed to efficiently filtrate 95% of 0.3 micron airborne particles. They are closely fitted by face, which have the best filtration capabilities among the above-mentioned 3 types. However, it doesn’t mean that put on such respirators can keep us away from any bad things.



Surgical masks


Surgical masks are disposable masks that have mainly 3 layers. The features and functions for them are as follows:


1. Outer layer

The outer layer of surgical masks are made of non-woven materials, which help to support ourselves to avoid droplets’ entering.


2. Middle layer

It is also called a melt-blown, which can filter 90% of particles with a diameter more than 5 micron.


3. Inner layer

Inner layer is the one covers our nose and mouth and absorb moisture.



Cotton masks


Most of the cotton masks are for keeping warm, without any effect to prevention.


To conclude, there exist different kinds of masks with distinguished characteristics. To support ourselves and prevent us from getting infected, we should pay attention to the selection of proper masks and overcome this with positive measures.
